Lion King Review (Pumba)

The lion king critique

The day we went to see the lion king I was really nervous because I didn’t no what it was going to be like. On the coach I sat next to Rhys and we were chatting and laughing the whole way there.

Once we finally arrived at the theatre, I was so excited. We was waiting ages for the show to actually start but once it did it was good .It started with a song and all the animals and characters came on it made u fell like u was there.

All the characters were really funny and good. Pumbaa was my favourite character because he was really funny and always made me laugh. At the break I couldn’t wait for the show to start again .when the show did start again it came on with older characters as if to say they have grown up, it was really imaginative. I liked the end as well when simba went back and they all sand a song.

It was really fun to go and a great opportunity. I wished we got to go again!

Poetry from team Pumba!

Simba

Crouching, crawling and creeping towards his prey,
Inside the brown reeds and beige dust,
Every step closer and closer,
Wait!
Watch!
Listen!

He has been spotted and the race begins,
The sheer pace of this incredible beast,
The muscle in the hind legs bulging constantly,
The grin of a clown, with teeth of icicles

Bit by bit,
Slowly but surely, edging closer with every stride,
Until the final leap,
The mane seeped in blood,
And the zebra’s legs torn clean off

Until the rest of the family get closer,
Nothing but voltures over head,
And flies buzzing,
Until the Roar of the African King!

By Alfie

The Snake

Here comes the Snake
Slithering by the lake

He spends all day
Looking for prey

Searching all night
To catch a bite

Rodent Birds Small Deer and Frogs
They even eat Termites from under logs

By Bethany

The zebras

Zebra’s hooves sound like clicking whilst running through the golden grass.
Elegantly they walk through the cool blue water.
Beautifully the fillies bat there big long eye lashes to the world.
Racing down the dusty desert to find a cold clean lake.
After waiting for the grass to grow they can finally eat some fresh new food.
Seeing the stripy animals in the sunset makes a better scene.

By Tavia

The Lioness

As she creeps and crawls through the long grass towards
the water hole, wait, Look, Listen, silently walks a few paces forwards closer, closer mouth dripping with hunger
getting closer suddenly pounces on her prey
the zebra is unlucky as it rots in the dusty plains of Africa.

By Oliver

Elephant

Eating away at the tall green trees
Leisurely swinging his trunk to and throw
Eager to make it back home safely
Plodding slowly through dirty plains
Heat from the sun beaming down on his rough skin
Alert all the time for oncoming predators
Never letting his calf out of sight
Tusks glistening white like crystals

Fussa - Creative Writing (Pumba)

One summer day in the heart of the African plains the tribe of Fusaa were out hunting with their spears. When the leader of the tribe turned around, he realised that the rest of his tribe, minus his brother, had completely disappeared to hunt different animals.

This harsh landscape was one that you would not want to be in on your own. With limited water supply and plenty of predators this meant that they had to conserve all energy and ration all supplies. The Fusaa were a very fierce tribe and attacked all neighbouring tribes. This was why the king was especially worried. Every night he sat and dreamt of a special crown he should own, this crown should be sacred and symbolise sheer power and leadership.

He knew he could only obtain this when he had killed the almighty King Zebra Kelkel. He turned right, looked left, thought about it and carried on. In the back of the bush, King Julian saw a large grey animal, he recognised immediately as a native African elephant, which is a very fond friend of the Fusaa tribe. He jumped on his back, and rode into the sunset towards the tribe of Marty, the hosts of King Kelkel. With each step the precious gecko on his head could smell this beautiful King Zebra.

Eventually he got to this unique tribes camp and saw this wonderful beast. As he drew his spear, and aimed for the King Zebra, he could see that there was no hope in hell that he was going to kill this zebra without dying himself. All of a sudden, the cheetah, and most of his tribe came along, to help King Julian to kill the zebra. But the fact of the matter was that in the end they all realised they were as strong as each other and there was no real winner.

Pumba's Mood Board!

On the first day, we brought in pictures, fabrics and anything that we thought of to do with Africa. We then stuck this on to a large piece of paper in an inventive way. This meant using all of our imagination to put it together in an inventive way!

This included pictures from the fair-trade group in Africa, which helps people to get a better wage for the things that they grow. We had many pictures of African people and the things that they do in there everyday life. As well as the landscape pictures we had a whole load of the animals that live in the continent.

With the pictures we split it up into four sections and put Africa in the middle. We also wrote words around, to do with Africa, for example starvation and elephants and things like that.

We learned a lot about the country’s, from Kenya to Egypt. We also learned about each others opinions of Africa and the experiences and holidays in Africa.

Africa

Hello my name is Shafiki and I live in the beautiful country named Egypt. The hot golden sandy desert is gorgeous glistening in the midday sun. The heat is immense! When you get really hot you sweat and dehydrate which causes you to see mirages. A mirage is illusions when you see thins that aren’t there. Camels, Scorpions and snakes are all amazing creatures that live in the desert. Pyramids are situated in deserts they attract many people to our country. Pyramids are made up of limestone rocks and inside them contain ancient bodies which have been mummified.

The River Nile runs through my country (Egypt). It is one of the most well known rivers in the world. Daily I collect water from the River Nile for my children and animals back home. The water isn’t very clean and it makes my children ill but it I don’t collect it we would not be able to survive.

Simba's Poetry!

The Lion

The lion runs like the speed of light,
Its sharp jagged teeth glimmer at the sight,
His dinner has finally come,
And the prey starts to run,
He catches up in a flash,
And the innocent prey ends up like mash.

The lion is now fed,
And he’s all ready for bed.
He snores beyond the beautiful night.
Then the sky is lit up with a beautiful light,
As a big bulging ball of red hot fire starts to rise,
His tail lazily swots away the flies.

By Rhys

Leopard

Creeping along the red sandy ground,
The Leopard has his eye on his prey,
Being extremely nimble and quick he gradually gets closer,
And in a flash the spotty figure pounces on its prey,
Lifting the well earned load and taking it up into the trees.

By Jack

Giraffes are very tall and walk very slow and elegantly.
In the wild they run free.
Reaching up high to food above.
Ahead is the water well where they gallop to get their daily drink.
Feeling warm but keeps on going.
Frightened when prey approaches they run to hide.
Exploring for leaves to rip off trees.
Slumbering giants of the Sahara.

By Jade

A Lions meal

The Lion creeps across the dry grass,
Ready to pounce and catch its prey.
The zebras elegantly eat grass,
Unaware of their sudden fate.
Then, thump! One of the slowest zebras is down,
Its head hits the ground heavily.

The starving lion cubs wait patiently for their dinner,
They pounce on the zebra,
Trying to enjoy their food,
As they won’t eat for days now.

Prowling Lion

Proud lion’s
Roaming the dangerous forest
Owing the poor creature close to death nothing but its respect
Waiting anxiously tall and still
Loathing that no creature comes his way,
Inspired his stomach has lasted this long
Nose twitches he smells his prey
Grabbing and killing it with no second to spare the lion has its dinner and so it ends there!

The Giraffe & African Animals - Zazu

The Giraffe

From the open plains come soft grinding,
Whilst the moon climbs higher into the darkening painted sky,
A hesitant giraffe munches on a once blossoming tree,
Stretching her elegant neck taller and taller into the waving branches,
As the tree stands proud, the giraffe is rooted to the spot,

Thirst; Wading toward the welcoming waters edge,
Spreading her slender dappled legs and dangling her tired mouth,
Rippling on the stillness of the glistening water,
Her long eyelashes flutter in the reflection,
She drinks.

African Animals

Angry antelopes charging through the
desert in their rage to get to the river!
Feisty cheetahs raid the jungle, shredding
the flesh of their prey!
Relaxed rhinos watch casually when the
leopards race after the elegant leaping
Antelopes!
Invinsible elephants stomp around the noisy
jungle munching on the leaves loudly!

Cruel vultures swoop down to land killing
other innocent animals with their razor
sharp claws ripping the other animals to
shreds!
Amazing giraffes bat their eyelashes slowly
walking from tree to tree silently eating
the leaves!

African Poems - Zazu

Zebra, Zebra as fast as lighting,
Sprinting through the savannah.
Standing proud and unique,
While showing off your stripes.

Giraffe, Giraffe as tall as a mountain,
Munching on the savannah,
Standing still guarding your home,
While admiring your beautiful skin.

Elephant, elephant as large as a continent,
Bathing in the savannah.
Standing amongst the crowd,
While feeding through your long trunk.

The Cheetah

The cheetah stalking prey in the Savanna waiting for its moment,
When approaching the antelope,
The antelope catching sight of the cheetah,
The brutal killer glances at the cowering cautious antelope,
Knowing the cheetah nothing is too fast for him reaching terrorising speeds,
Catching up to the antelope leaping bounding tails flashing,

As the cheetah takes that bounding leap towards victory,
Gripping and gripping the neck of its prey,
Dragging it into the dust suffocating its prey,
As the cheetah drags its prey to the young,
It must ward off hungry predators,
So its offspring can feed.

By Billy

The Lions

Tracking their prey stealthily through the grass
Hiding in the wild jungle, waiting to attack, getting ready to
Eat a buffalo.

Lions’ sharp teeth and claws will rip you apart
In fact, the fast and fierce king of the jungle
Only attacks when it is hungry, feasting on
Nourishing buffalos and springing gazelles
Sneaking through the grass, climbing trees, roaring in the night

African Plains

African plains are dusty and hot
Animals you will meet a lot!
Flamingos lounge about in the sun
They’d rather sleep than have some fun
Rhinos really like to munch
You hear the grass inside go crunch
Impalas like to graze around
With their feet firm on the ground
Cicadas chirp high in the trees
They’re just looking for little fleas
Aardvarks dig their habitats
With all the mice and all the rats.

Zazu Set Design

Zazu’s shoebox

Our set design was based on the African jungle. We were asked to make and design a set which would be our ideal set if we had enough time and money. In our set we put a waterhole to represent where the animals drink and bathe in the jungle. We put straw on the floor to represent the dusty ground of Africa. We also hung up colourful birds to show the amazing different birds in the African jungle. We added curtains and a fringe to make our shoebox set look more like a real stage.

How we made our set

Firstly we used cardboard and tissue to make our background; we made our scene a daytime scene by using light colours. Secondly we made a spinning waterhole and drew a tree to make our set look more like a jungle. After that we laid down glitter and straw for our floor. Then we made colourful African birds out of feathers, pipe cleaners and a pom pom. We then made a rock out of polystyrene and painted it gold; we then stuck pipe cleaners on the top as tassels. Lastly we found some cheetah print fabric and cut out curtains and a fringe for our stage set. This is how we made our ideal stage set.

The White Lions of Timbavati - Timon

"Grrr" I growled, chasing a butterfly with Gandor, my best friend who always gets in the way of me having fun.
Anyway, I suppose I should introduce myself... I am Ciara, the daughter of the leader and the youngest white lion cub in my pride, but being the youngest isn't a bad thing, everybody looks after you and you get all of the attention!

Gandor is three months older than me and is also in the same pride, he is always annoying me but personally I think it's just because he's jealous that everyone sticks up for me.
I don't always get on with Gandor but he is the only other child in the pride, I would be in big trouble if I talked to anyone from another pride, that rule is unbearable but it has to be said that rules are only there to keep us safe, and because parents are boring and don't want us to make new friends, as it would make them look bad if their children had more friends than they do!
The good thing is that my dad sleeps all day, I think he should be more alert, being the leader and all. My mum however is always on the ball yet never goes out hunting with all of the other lionesses, but when she eventually goes then Gandor and I can explore outside the boundaries. I'm a budding explorer you see and I love playing adventure games with Gandor. We imagine the most exciting things, but somehow it never seems real, which is disappointing but Gandor has learned to deal with it. I, however, have not.

One early morning all of the pride walked, observing our surroundings with much caution, down to the water hole to drink but we all got the shock of our lives... the water was gone, completely gone. What was going on, everyone was muttering to each other but I was scared, terrified. So What next? Were we going to die? Would we have to migrate? If so, where would we all go? I didn't know how to feel, what to say or what to do.

Suddenly an idea popped into my head, that night, when everyone else was asleep Gandor and I would go and get the water back. I'm not sure how but I know we'll manage somehow.
The rest of the day felt longer than ever, I still hadn't mentioned my idea to Gandor, I was going to have to, sooner or later, but what if he said no, or told the adults? It turned out that I had nothing to worry about, Gandor would be delighted to attend my little mission and I knew he wasn't a tell-tale.

So as night-time approached I drew the plan, I carved it into soft clay rock using my sharpest claw, that is not so sharp anymore! Everything’s ready, so all we need to do is wait.
So as the sun set and night fell, it felt like a cloak of darkness was being stretched over the sky, and soon enough everyone else was fast asleep. We both trotted off into the distance and, of course, I took the lead. 'SNAP!' "What was that?" I heard the quivering voice of Gandor, "Don't worry!" I replied "This is going to be a real adventure."

I soon felt something warm and fluffy on my paw and, of course, I screamed, big mistake. Who knows which animals I had worked up. "It's only me, Gandor" Whispered the soothing voice of Gandor. "You scared me there, don't you dare do that again!" I whispered back and he nodded in return.

It felt like we had been walking for years but we finally found water. There had clearly been a mud-slide and the mud had been deposited in a small stream, the stream that kept water flowing to the water hole! Gandor and I began digging, removing the mud blocking the water flow. Because of the heat the water hole had dried up over night and due to the mud, no water was there to fill it up.

'SPLASH!' The wall of mud burst open, returning water to the water hole. But we were being carried away, I Know neither of us can swim so I began to worry but I also knew that we would end up back home. I closed my eyes, only to find that when I opened them me and Gandor had been washed up next to our parents. We lay there in the moonlight and dried off in no time. All I can say is, Mission Successful!

Hunted Down - Timon

African elephants hunted down:

The African elephants plodded slowly across the clearing there grey bodies stood out clearly in front of the newly rising sun.

The smallest of them raced to catch up with his mother, as they moved towards the water hole to drink. There was a long day ahead of them. They lost the leader of there herd to a bunch of hyenas yesterday and they weren’t going to loose someone today. As they drunk a clatter of hooves could be heard in the distance and a cloud of dust came between them and the stampede. Loud grunts sounded and the dust cleared. Six buffalos lay dead on the edge of the horizon; the elephants began to panic ten lionesses stood circling them. One jumped forward and an elephant bucked the lioness pounced, it went down under the water clinging to the elephants flesh. No bubbles silence. It went on like that for five minutes and then up it came the lioness holing a lifeless body, it screeched to the others they dived, blood was everywhere some ran and came collapsing down as the lionesses ran at there legs. They backed away and began crunching and chewing at the meat. Blood was spattered across the edge of the water hole and the water looked like thick red paint. That is how elephants die and how lionesses feed, it’s the way of life.

The African Plains & Twiga- Timon

THE AFRICAN PLAINS

The animals creep silently towards the rising sun, sitting on the horizon,
Heat waves rise off the silver plains, the sand cools as the trees give shelter,
Elephants plod in the distance, their shadows dark as they move along,

As the sun shines its first light, the moon and stars fade away,
Flamingos dance as they dive for fish in the murky water,
Ravenous lions bring down their prey; it struggles to free its self,
In the distance the acacia trees sway in the breeze,
Camels walk tall and gracefully past silhouettes in the distance,
All around animals wake to the sound of the bird squawking above,
Nothing can compare to the music of the animals feet when they trample through the long grass,

Plants grow in the dry land, and the flowers blossom and flower,
Lakes shimmer in the morning light, and wooden boats float on the surface,
A hyena laughs as it chases a heard of gazelles, one falls as it follows the others,
In the water holes the hippos drink, and the alligators catch their food,
Native tribes hunt with their spears, as the animals flee for safety
Sunlight grows strong and the animals rest under the cool shadows.

Timon's Lion King Review

The lion king critique!

Yesterday the 26/8/09 we went to see the lion king in theatre it was amazing. The whole impact of the music the stage design, all the actors and the actresses were great. There interpretation of the animal they were playing was so good for a moment I thought they were real animals.

The singing was amazing and we had great seats we were sat in the royal circle. And the bonus was we dint have to pay! The way the animals moved was outstanding. The set design was very simple but very effective it worked with all the scenes. I think everyone loved it.

Timon's Set Design

Our set design was based on the African plains and the lion king. We were set a task to make a disguised shoebox set that would be ideal for our performance if we had the time and money.

First of all we had to think about what we were going to do, we chose to make a late sunrise design with a golden half sun in the background and pride rock in the corner. We also had a waterfall running down pride rock into a lake.

There is also a small camp and a burning fire (which we made out of little sticks and orange tissue paper for extra texture) for the hunters. An elephant and a giraffe have been placed in the set as well. In front of pride rock we added another smaller rock surrounded by dry and limp grass. The golden sun was stuck to a clear blue sky with a bird hanging on a peace of string. We also put some animal patterned curtains on the sides of the box.

Timon's mood board

Timon’s mood Board

We included many different things in our mood board including pictures that we collaged together, some words in Swahili like simba and Jambo, and some different patches of texture.

We had pictures of people and animals so we decided to split them up and most of the animal pictures went into the bottom right hand corner of our mood board and the human pictures were positioned mostly along the top.

We titled our mood board ‘Africa’ that we cut out of scarves which had an animal print and that gave an atmosphere of Africa as the prints were those of a zebra and a leopard. We also had some fur fabric which we cut and stuck all around the board to give a nice texture.

Another thing we did was cut up strips of different coloured blue card and layered them along a path we had already drawn to form the river Nile.

We outlined our title to make it stand out as the board was a bit crowded. At the top we drew a sunset alongside a picture of one to really set the scene of Africa. That was helped by our choice of colours which were mostly hot colours (red and yellow) as they are the colours most people associate with Africa.

Laughing Predator - Rafiki

Laughing Predator

The hyenas laughing hysterically,
At the gazelles that jump like ballerinas through the tall grass,
Their heads emerging every few seconds is their entertainment for the day.
Even whilst hunting they have to contain their giggles,
Creeping slowly, they are the vultures of the night.
Red and orange are painted on the land
The giant fireball, retreating like a snail into the continuous sand dunes.
The jesters run alongside the powerful lions,
Drinking animals scatter like marbles on a concrete floor,
Leaving the mocking calls of the hyenas behind them.

Sentry on the plains - Rafiki

Sentry on the plains
by Stan

The sentry looked out across the amber plain.
Like a periscope perches above the golden grass,
Looking for intruders in his tranquil domain.
Watching and waiting for the day to pass.

Suddenly the air casts a chilling shadow,
A deathly eagle probes, waiting to cause harm,
To any inattentive meerkat below.
Quick as a bolt, the meerkat raises the alarm.

Squealing in fear he leaves his post,
With his bolt upright tail as a flag in the air,
To warn his friends and family in his host,
Telling them to run, duck and dive to their lair.

In the heat of the chase, his heart rate rises
Closer and closer to the safety of his coop,
Yet he does not get there and sadly demises
As the demonic eagle snatches him with one fell swoop.

The Elephant

The Elephant

The Tembo, the Elephant
Is a beautiful creature
There ears are big enough to fly with
There eyes are like big black portals
And there skin as wrinkly as a prune

The Elephants herd travels together,
Walk together, stick up for each other together
When on there journeys they stop
At where there friends and loved ones have died
They circle the ground smelling it
And trying to remember the sweet memories

When the poachers come
The elephants get angry
They shake there heads and stamp there feet
To create dust and to scare the poachers away

When the sunset begins
The Elephants make there way to the waterhole
The Elephants play and drink there till night
And then they dry of And settle down to a peaceful slumber.

Africa Poem - Rafiki

Africa

The sunrise began to start
As the sun and the ground fell apart

A beautiful day in the land
All the animals came to a stand

Animals running
Their coats looking stunning

All day long
The clip clop of zebras makes a special song

Elephants plodding around very proud
So ear piercing and so loud

Giraffe’s neck really long
But different not wrong

Then it set
And the sun and ground met.

Menacing meerkat

Menacingly they scurry through the long bronze grass
bleached by the sun
Elegantly they stand straight and still on guard for danger
Eagerly they dig and scratch at the dried soil

Killing its meal munching away not making a sound
Africa is the home of these amazing creatures

TEMBO

The giant wrinkled creature plods across the rising sun peeking above the horizon
Emerging animals make silhouettes in front of the beaming sun
Moving slowly the grey heavy giant stomps towards the blue glistening water hole

Over the water hole the sun has risen, he dips his long trunk into the refreshing water and slurps it violently.

Lion King Review by Leah (Mufasa)

On the 26th of August 2009 we went and watched lion king we got on the coach at 12 and we got to the theatre around 1:15 we had to be in our seats for 1:30. Lion king was very good my favourite part off lion king was when timon was being weird. Also I thought I was good the way they started off with a small lion then it went to a big lion. I thought the part when the dad died was sad and bring a tear to your eyes. I thought these characters were so funny especially their singing it was so funny.

The lion king was so cool I would love to go back and watch it again. I thought the big lion king was so funny I would love to play the part off his best friend. Also I think their outfits and their masks were so cool I would love to play one off their parts it is so cool but I would not like to sing. I also like their hats because if the person moves and it is funny, I think it would be better if u couldn’t see their faces and u can only see the masks.

Mufasa's Lion King Review

The Lion King

The lion king is an incredible musical about a young lion named Simba and how he fights for his kingdom. The show starts with the song ‘The Circle of Life’. The music was amazing, filling the whole theatre with beautiful sound and creating a wonderful atmosphere. As the play goes on the sets change and new characters appear. I felt that the set was surprisingly basic for such a hit show. I was expecting more detailed sets with perhaps some bigger movable pieces such as bushes and trees and other rocks. However, maybe this helped us, the audience, focus on the action and the characterisation.

The main features of the set were: Pride Rock , which rose up on a turntable ; the buffalo stampede , which were two logs with wooden buffalo attached to them, and as these spun round, it gave the effect of the buffalo running. There was also a rectangular block which simply rose up and down. This brought up many different things, such as Mufasa’s dead body, which was an unusual and effective way to introduce things onstage.

My two favourite characters were Pumba, the warthog, who was really funny, and Nala, the lioness, Simba’s true love. I liked Nala because she was very brave and clever. I thought Pumba’s costume was really ingenius because the actor’s hair was styled like a warthogs, all black and spiky and his arms operated the character’s mouth . The actor’s legs were used as the front legs and the back legs were just attached to the costume.

Altogether, I thought the show was brilliant. I have seen the film, so I knew the story, but the theatre really brought it to life. I loved every minute and would definitely recommend it to anyone who would like an evening at the theatre.

Mafusa's Hunt

Mufasa’s Hunt

The hike to the hunting area lasted hours. With a total of 50 men and women, the clamour of crowd pierced the atmosphere, but the drought still continued. People sighing, stopping and collapsing. Everyone desperate for a drink or a piece of food. Anything to keep them alive. With no other food sources available, they had to hunt. Half way, the temperature had doubled, everyone sweating, and fed up, but still desperate to get there and eat their meat.

The giraffe and elephant, so close to the end of their life, were faced away from the hunters. The long neck of the giraffe reached up to an uneven branch, full with leaves. The elephant’s deafening footsteps plodded next to the oasis, his trunk swaying from side to side. The Mufasa tribe envied the animals as they had piles of food, waiting for them, unlike them. The Afrikaans shouted and both the animals turned round in shock, and started to run: the giraffe faster than the elephant. The big chase carried on and on until the animals were surrounded. Spears pierced the giraffe and the elephant and they slowly toppled to the ground. The Afrikaans did a trbal dance and then started to eat. It was there only option. With food as meagre as it was, they had to do it; otherwise they would be the ones dying.

Famine - A poem by Becky (Mufasa)

Famine

Her back aching daily, after her demanding day working.
She is only young, but has no choice.
As the Queen, up above, shimmers permanently,
Trekking to the raging river, only ten miles away,
In bare feet, she struggles.
Only one litre does she get,
To share between her five sisters, brother, parents and her.

Mourning her father, food is scarce too.
Her older brother farms and sells vegetables and milk.
With another child on the way, the mother with Aids,
There is no hope.
Very little money is saved, therefore no school.
She envies her friends
As they have fun learning.
If her and many other’s dreams could come true,
Then Africa would be a much happier place.

Fires African people use when they get cold
Really skinny people in Africa coz they don’t eat
Insects they catch and eat
Camels they use to ride sometimes
Animals running around fast knocking over people
Naughty animals get treated the same

People live in mud huts
Everyone in Africa helps hunt for food
On Africa people clean in rivers
Place in the sun making people die
Lying in bed makes me rise with all the flies
End off my night I end my day

Introducing Group Mufasa!

Introduction

Our group is called Mufasa. In our group, we have Ross, our group leader, Sophie, Francesca, Hayden, Leah and myself, Becky. During the week, we have done a range of activities based on Africa. We have all experienced new things, some that we have enjoyed and others that we were not so strong at. Our confidence has grown dramatically, as an individual and as a group.

Throughout the week, we have bonded with people inside and outside of the group and also challenged ourselves at things that we thought we were not able to do, therefore we will come back to school in September with new skills. We would like to present to you the work that we have completed this week. This includes our mood board, on Africa, our set design and our play. Our first piece of work is our mood board.

Mood Board Speech

On Monday, one of our tasks was to make a mood board based on what we thought reminded us of Africa. We include lots of pictures, brought in from home, some information and various colours as we thought of Africa, when we saw the pictures. We had a wide range of pictures including animals, landscapes, people, culture and colours. It also contains a fact file listing general information about the continent. We have a map of Africa as well as pieces of information about things like animals, rivers and disease. The background of our mood board is animal patterned tissue paper. This represents some of the animals that could be found around Africa. Next we will talk about our set design.

Speech for set

In our set we put food for the animals because in our play the giraffe and elephant are eating.
We also put bones made out of polystyrene to represent starving animals and the death of our two animals that were killed by the mufasa tribe.

We added glitter to our scene to show the sand on the plains of Africa because we wanted to give the effect off the bright sun reflecting off the golden sands.

We decided to add rocks to show part off their habitat. These can be used for lions to lounge on but also for animals to shelter in the shade off the rocks due to the hot weather.
We added an oasis because the play involves the elephant drinking out of it and this is what would also be found in Africa.

In our set we have straw to represent the dry long grass where the mufasa tribe are hiding waiting to attack the giraffe and the elephant.

Our whole set ties in with the theme off Africa and off the lion king witch also gave us the inspiration to create our set we felt that creating this set fit in with are play as other wise setting our play in the artic with not work with are script.

Pumba Group Diary!

Day One:

Today we met everyone inside our groups, and mainly just got to know each other by talking and really working well as a group. This experience was really good, and not only did we make some new friends, but we managed to get plenty of work done and worked really well as a team.
First of all we read a poem called, Zebra, which was followed by much decision of the meaning and of how we felt about the poem. We then had to choose our favourite line and pick three or four pictures that described this line in our opinions. This was followed by our own poem writing, we learned about the different types of poem and some of the main techniques to use in our poems.

After this we had to use some of our own pictures to make our mood boards of Africa. This really helped us learn a lot about the culture and ways of life in Africa. Some people used pieces of fabrics, colouring pens and pencils, magazine cut outs and pictures. In this we had to work really well as a team and to get it done whilst having a laugh.

We then played a game of limbo. Which we learned was from the slave ships, to keep them moving. This was a really good way to finish off the day and a whole load of fun!

Overall the day was really great and I am pretty sure that most people are looking forward to the next day, but especially Wednesdays trip to see the lion king!

Day Two:

Today we went to the art room and made masks for the end play. The masks we made were of animals and African tribe people. Alfie and I made the tribal masks from the Fusaa the others made animals that would be killed in the end play.

After break Gemma and Steven went and did the music for the play and Dorothy and Bethany did the set design in a shoe box then we did creative writing and it was the end of the day.

By ??

Day Four:

Today we started with discussing our play and what the story line was. Me, Georgia and alfie are the human tribe ,Bethany ,Ollie and jemma are the animal tribe. The animal and human tribe hate each other but a human and animal get lost and meet then become good friends. The tribes learn to like each other after the good friendship there friends share.

After that we went into the hall to practice our plays we only got a certain time so we had to work pretty quickly. we write poems to go with our play about the tiger and the tribes .

At the end we got to play a couple of games before we went home.

It was fun!

Zazu Group Diary!

Monday 24th August

Today the first thing we did was registration and fun puzzles. After that we read the zebra poem and picked a line out of the poem and drew a picture of it. Then my group (Zazu) went off into a separate room and everyone made up their own poems about African animals. At break time Shona shared her French chocolate sticks with a few of us and they were really nice but tasted weird at the same time. We then went and finished our poems. After that we made our mood boards in our groups. We used lots of African pictures, materials, beads and information. Once we had finished our mood boards and tidied up the library, we went and played limbo. It was really good fun, some of us in our group fell over but I didn’t. It was a very enjoyable day!

Tuesday 25th August.

Today we made masks to use in our production based around animals in the poems. We will be performing to our parents in the hall. My mask is meant to be a Buffalo, my favourite part about it is that we all got to make our masks but the worst part is the fact that we only had two hours today to make them. Today our group had to decide what poem we would be acting out and decide what music to use for the selected poem. Some members of our group had to make a diorama of the stage for our play. Francesca also has to write a story. Also I was selected to write a blog (this).

Wednesday 26th August 2009

Wow best day of the week. I love the west end shows.

But more of that later. First of all maths puzzles to crack!. These Sudoku’s are hard but I think I have sussed them out now.

Next it’s off to the art room to finish our masks. Mines a buffalo. Looks a bit like a cow to me but it will have to do. You can tell a lot of the others are talented in art as their masks are brilliant.

Getting excited now only lunch to go and then we are off to London. When we arrived at the theatre it was busy as usual. Great seats up in the circle.

I thought the show was fantastic. My favourite bit was at the start when all the animals walked through the crowd onto the stage. The thing that struck me was how colourful it was. The actor’s animal costumes were so good they made me believe they were real.

I liked the way they used different instruments in different ways to create the movement of each animal. I think we should try and use some of these ideas in our performance.

Safely home. Had a great day. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Thursday 27th August

First we had registration and then went to the gym room and choreographed a dance to music made from our hand – made African musical instruments. We did this for 1 hour and 30 minutes. Then we had lunch from 11:00 – 11:30 outside in the dull, cloudy weather with a little breeze. After lunch we went back into the gym to finish off our play and dance. When we hade completed that, some of us went to the lecture theatre to write a critique about the Lion King performance that we saw on Wednesday. Then we proceeded back to the gym to play some games as we had some time left.

We played a game that involved a lot of energy, and the last one to do something or the one who does something wrong would be eliminated. When I hade to pick up a survivor I had no energy left and my arms went to jelly! When there were just 4 people left (I was one of those people) we played a game called murderball, where the 4 survivors from the previous game would have to throw a ball at people from the waist and below. If we succeeded then the person who got hit would join the other team. It was a really fun day.

First day at summer school 24th august 2009

Today at summer school, everyone was a bit shy considering we had never met before. We got there at around 8:30, and did some puzzles until 9:00. We had three different puzzles to pick from, but I only finished one. At 9 o’clock we had a little welcoming by Miss Jackson and Miss Bird. They were telling us what we are going to do on the course of this week. After the little welcoming we started to get to know each other a bit, by doing some group work. Miss Bird took us into the lecture room, and read us a fascinating poem about zebras, we had to pick a phrase as a group and either illustrate it or do a little drama sketch.
After we had all done that Miss Bird went through some African words, the only ones I can remember are:JAMBO-hello.TWIGA-giraffe.TIMBO-elephant.After that we had to make a poem about something to do with Africa we made a mind map on anything African and then included them in our poems. I enjoyed making the poems because we were all working together. After we had made our African poems we went back into our groups and made a massive mood board on ‘Africa’, I enjoyed this a lot as we all brought in different fabrics and pictures to include. Then we went outside with Miss Bird and did some limbo, I’d say Alice and I were the champs, as we worked together.

Second day at summer school 25th august 2009

The morning began at 8:30am and we were all a bit less shy than yesterday, we soon began our puzzles and afterwards we were taken into the art room to make masks.

We had many different resources to add an African theme to our masks, we had to make the masks linked to our groups chosen poem and in our group we had a flamingo, a lion, a giraffe, a hyena, an elephant and a member of a native tribe.

Next we had our break and after that two people from each group went back to the art room to create a set in a shoe box. The rest of us went back to the library and sorted out a task for each person to do, these tasks included creative writing and selecting a backing for the presentation.

Rafiki Group Diary!

Our first day of summer school

Today was our first day at summer school! We arrived at school at 8:30 and started working on our puzzles. Then we got to know each other a bit. We then read a poem with Miss Bird called zebras. We had to create either a piece of drama on it or a picture!

We moved into the lecture theatre and started our work! Miss Bird taught us some African words like Tembo means Elephant, Jambo means Hello and Twiga means Giraffe. Our group did a picture based on the poem Zebras where on each page the zebras were pulling the sun further across the page.

We then started on creating our own poems about Africa. I did an acrostic poem about an Elephant and I called it Tembo to impress Miss Bird with my African! And I got a lollypop for it. J After our morning break we finished our poems then moved back into the library to create our mood boards. We had a big piece of card to fill up with African pictures, materials, and some information. We completely filled ours up with patterns, materials and pictures.

At the end of the day Miss Bird took us out to do some limbo! It was a laugh and me and Myriam were doing it together and getting very low! Sadly Miss Jackson didn’t join in but Miss Bird had a go! I did enjoy my first day of summer school and I look forward to going to see the Lion King!

Kate’s blog

First thing this morning my group read each others poems that we had written about African animals. We discussed the merits of each poem amongst ourselves and chose the one that we thought was the best. The poem that stood out that was voted the best was about hyenas and gazelles. Then we were asked to make a mask for the reenactment of the poem we chose earlier.

I was asked to be a gazelle, I used fake fur, various coloured paint pipe cleaners and card to produce my mask. I was quite satisfied with the finished article. After break some of us, including myself went to the art room we made a set for our poem using a shoebox as our stage. I made a rock of polystyrene, a tree, the sun, a water hole and the back ground out of card. I thought my work was pretty good and I enjoyed myself a lot.

Wednesday

Firstly today we were told what we would be doing and what we needed to get finished. We then all went the art room to finish off our masks for the presentation on Friday, I almost didn’t finished because I had to quickly finish off the back of my mask, Ellen’s mask is the best gazelle mask I have ever seen, its so neat and detailed. Everyone’s masks were very colourful and represented all the different African animals, some people also did Tribe masks, Stanley, our team leader, had to create another mask because we needed a lion mask for our performance piece.

We all then went to a longer break, we were allowed to eat in the library because it was cold outside, when we finished our lunches we were told what would happen next had then had to line up next to the person you wanted to sing next to at the Lion King and given our tickets, we then were all taken to the coach and told to get on and put on our seatbelts,

It took us about an hour to get into London and park, some of us left our bags on the coach and the others took them with them, we then made our way to the theatre. We had to stay outside a bit because we got there a little early but a little while later the doors opened and we were let in. We were sitting in the royal circle, which I think were the best seats because you could see everything on the stage.

On the stage of the Lion King there was always more than one thing going on at a time so it was very difficult to focus on one thing. I think the way the actors made the animals move was very clever and realistic. We’re hoping to add some of these techniques into out performances tomorrow. The music was very good, all the actors had really good voices and the African drums in the background made it all the more realistic. As well as the sets the costumes were all in tune with the characters.

In some parts of the Lion King there were funny parts but there were also dramatic scenes as well. Rafiki was my favourite character as she was very funny in many parts. This was the first time I have seen the lion king in the theatre and I have to say I was impressed a lot, everything about it was amazing. I can’t wait to do our performances on Friday now.

Monday 24th August

Today was the first day of the summer camp. We done a poetry workshop which was where we looked at poems and created one of our own. We made a mood board, within our groups, where we had to stick items to a white piece of cardboard such as, information, pictures and pieces of cloth, all in relation to Africa.

The best part of the day for me, was doing the mood board and meeting new friends. I think everyone here is happy to be making new friends.

Wednesday 26th August

Today our first activity was completing our mask to use for the performance on Friday. A lot of us still had improvements to do or complete there masks. But a few people didn’t come on Tuesday so they didn’t start there masks so a few of us were rushing around to try and get there complete as well as ours. The extra time to complete our mask was very good so we could perfect our masks to a high standard. I’m extremely pleased with my mask I like the way it has turned out. Everyone’s mask turned out amazingly good they were all done extremely well.

After our lunch break we all got on the coach to go to see the Lion King in the west end. On the coach it was a good laugh, we were all telling jokes and just having a good time. Then we got to Lion King and we all lined up outside. Then we went inside and went straight to my seat, but everyone else went and bought the over priced souvenirs and just got ripped off! Of course Miss Jackson wanted some sweets so I gave her some and she got about 10 peoples sweets! The show was amazing, the performance was just fantastic and the costumes were outstanding. Our masks had no comparison to those in the Lion King ours were amazing but there’s were mind blowing! The movement of the actors and actresses was just like animal especially the leopard and the zebras. My favourite character has to be Pumba he was really funny in the play, most of the play was funny. Overall the okay was really good and I can’t wait to see it again. The hazy lights made me tired so I can’t wait to go to bed, it wasn’t the play the made me tired, honest. I can’t wait till tomorrow and Friday.

Mufasa Group Diary!

Monday 24th August
We arrived at school around 8:30 and registered in the library. We were put into groups. We were called Mufasa and our team leader was Ross. He told me to write he’s amazing. Ms Jackson told us about what we would be doing during the next week and then left us to do some puzzles. Then Ms Bird talked to us about Africa and we left the library to go to the lecture theatre.

In the lecture theatre we looked at some Swahili words. We also looked at some poems about Africa and then had to write our own. At 10:45 we had break for half an hour and after we went back to the lecture theatre to finish our poems. Around 12:00 we went back to the library and started to make a mood board with our group using materials we had brought in.

Our mood board was really colourful and had lots of pictures and information. We all enjoyed cutting things out, drawing and writing, while we talked to each other and started to bond. Around 1:15 we all tidied up the mess we had made. We went out behind the library and for the last 15 minutes and we all played limbo, a game played by African slaves in the slave ships to let them exercise in a minimal amount of space. Once we had each had a few goes we collected our bags and went home to have lunch.

Tuesday 25th August

Today we all met at 8:30am in the library. We finished off our mood boards and then went to the art rooms. We were talked through the materials that we could use, and the sort of animals. Our group was moved to another art room. Three of us made tribal men and women and two of us made animals – a giraffe and an elephant. At 11 o’ clock we had our break until 11:30. We met in the library and discussed what jobs we were all going to do. One person did the blog, another chose the music, another person typing a piece of creative writing, whilst the others decorated their shoebox set.

At this time, we were starting to piece our work together, ready for Friday. Each day the group bonds more, as we do group tasks and have to work together, helping each other. Once everybody had done what they aimed to do by the end of the day, we all met in the library. Ms Jackson talked us through the plan for Wednesday and we all made notes. After that (at 1:30pm), we were allowed to go home. I feel that once one day is over, I look forward to the next!

Thursday 27th August

This morning we signed in at the library at 8.30am. After that we prepared a script for the performance to parents tomorrow. We then went into the gym to rehearse. In my group, two characters (who represented animals) were killed for food for the tribespeople, which was quite dramatic. I was one of the tribespeople, along with Sophie and Hayden and we had specially designed costumes, made by our very own fashion designer, Ross. The costumes were – interesting!

At around 11am, we took a much needed break (well, there’s only so much ‘dying’ an animal person can do in one morning!)

After break and our time rehearsing, we went into the lecture theatre to type up our scripts and Lion King critiques. Once that was finished, we went back to the gym for the best part of the day, playing some crazy games!

We played a shipping game and had great fun running about collecting survivors and saluting the captain, Miss Jackson. We also played murder ball, where four people had a ball and the ball was thrown at our feet. If it touched them we were then on that person’s team and could throw the ball ourselves to snare some more teammates.

By this time it was the end of our day and we all went our separate ways home.
