Sentry on the plains - Rafiki

Sentry on the plains
by Stan

The sentry looked out across the amber plain.
Like a periscope perches above the golden grass,
Looking for intruders in his tranquil domain.
Watching and waiting for the day to pass.

Suddenly the air casts a chilling shadow,
A deathly eagle probes, waiting to cause harm,
To any inattentive meerkat below.
Quick as a bolt, the meerkat raises the alarm.

Squealing in fear he leaves his post,
With his bolt upright tail as a flag in the air,
To warn his friends and family in his host,
Telling them to run, duck and dive to their lair.

In the heat of the chase, his heart rate rises
Closer and closer to the safety of his coop,
Yet he does not get there and sadly demises
As the demonic eagle snatches him with one fell swoop.
