Timon Group Diary!

First day at summer school 24th august 2009

Today at summer school, everyone was a bit shy considering we had never met before. We got there at around 8:30, and did some puzzles until 9:00. We had three different puzzles to pick from, but I only finished one. At 9 o’clock we had a little welcoming by Miss Jackson and Miss Bird. They were telling us what we are going to do on the course of this week. After the little welcoming we started to get to know each other a bit, by doing some group work. Miss Bird took us into the lecture room, and read us a fascinating poem about zebras, we had to pick a phrase as a group and either illustrate it or do a little drama sketch.
After we had all done that Miss Bird went through some African words, the only ones I can remember are:JAMBO-hello.TWIGA-giraffe.TIMBO-elephant.After that we had to make a poem about something to do with Africa we made a mind map on anything African and then included them in our poems. I enjoyed making the poems because we were all working together. After we had made our African poems we went back into our groups and made a massive mood board on ‘Africa’, I enjoyed this a lot as we all brought in different fabrics and pictures to include. Then we went outside with Miss Bird and did some limbo, I’d say Alice and I were the champs, as we worked together.

Second day at summer school 25th august 2009

The morning began at 8:30am and we were all a bit less shy than yesterday, we soon began our puzzles and afterwards we were taken into the art room to make masks.

We had many different resources to add an African theme to our masks, we had to make the masks linked to our groups chosen poem and in our group we had a flamingo, a lion, a giraffe, a hyena, an elephant and a member of a native tribe.

Next we had our break and after that two people from each group went back to the art room to create a set in a shoe box. The rest of us went back to the library and sorted out a task for each person to do, these tasks included creative writing and selecting a backing for the presentation.
